An image analysis method, which describes the shape of a particle, is described. The method uses Fourier techniques, applied to angular bend in the periphery of the particle and arc length. Neural networks use the Fourier descriptions to cluster and classify particles by shape. A number describing the class of a particle and the mean of a population of particles can then be used for characterization.
