In this paper electronic predistortion (EPD) for chromatic dispersion is studied for direct detection systems based either on an IQ-modulator or a directly modulated laser. When using EPD with an I/Q-modulator for 40 Gbit/s transmission, nearly no penalty in comparison to optical dispersion managed systems occurs. The concept of EPD my be applied even for directly modulated semiconductor lasers enabling...
Coherence in optics and transport is investigated for quantum cascade lasers. While coherence provides oscillations in the gain recovery if the tunnel coupling surpasses the broadening, incoherent hopping transport can fail in the opposite case.
Using density-matrix theory, the nonlinear optical and transport properties of quantum cascade lasers are investigated. Damping of the optically induced coherence is discussed and experimentally observed wave packet propagation is studied in pump-probe signals.
