We achieved the first penalty-free 40 Gb/s transmission at 1064 nm over a 6 km-long, low loss PCF. A negative power penalty was achieved by using the pre-chirp technique with a Z-cut LN modulator
A novel method for evaluating the effective cutoff characteristic in an optical fiber is described both numerically and experimentally. It is clarified that the proposed technique, which is based on far-field pattern measurement under different launching conditions, can be applied not only to conventional single-mode fiber but also to a fiber with improved bending loss.
Photonic crystal fiber is a promising candidate for future transmission media due to its unobtainable features in a conventional single-mode fiber. We discuss some important problems to realize a PCF for transmission purpose.
