The properties of nanodielectrics have been shown to be critically dependent on the way in which the materials are formulated. Large scale agglomeration often has disastrous effects on the resultant properties when conventional techniques are used to prepare the materials. In particular, the dispersion of the nanophase material has been shown to be critical. This contribution seeks to examine the...
This paper examines the hydrothermal aging of XLPE/silica nanocomposites. Nanocomposites are exposed to humid environment with a relative humidity of 100% at 50°C and the changes in moisture diffusion and electrical strength are investigated. In addition to moisture decreasing the electrical performance of nanocomposites somewhat, there is evidence that moisture can permanently damage the nanocomposites.
Ashcraft-type samples have been used to grow vented water trees in crosslinked polyethylene and crosslinked polyethylene based nanocomposites with 5 wt% and 12.5 wt% functionalized silica. Tree growths are reported at a range of stresses by sectioning the samples destructively. A nondestructive method is also introduced which allows visualization of electrochemical trees without sectioning. Nanocomposites...
Quality control has demanded methods to quantify the mixing state of nanoparticles imbedded in polymeric materials. Several quantification methods are reviewed based on the analysis of images from electron microscopy. This includes the quadrat-based skewness, nearest neighbor distance, the k-function and Monte Carlo method. A novel method in which the dispersion and distribution are evaluated respectively...
