We derive the spectral dispersion law for the virtually-imaged phased-array (VIPA) based on paraxial wave theory using Fresnel diffraction analysis. The validity of the dispersion law is verified by comparison with experiments.
We demonstrate 12-17 pm and 7-9 pm linewidth for the virtually imaged phased array wavelength demultiplexer with 100 GHz and 50 GHz free spectral range respectively. We also present the first analytic theory for the linewidth.
