Das Ganze ist nicht die Summe der Teile: Fibrillen bilden sich sowohl vom Volllängen‐Sup35‐Prionenprotein als auch von seiner isolierten NM‐Domäne. Eine Konformationsanalyse der beiden Proteine belegt, dass Sup35NM und seine Fragmente – oft als bequeme Modelle verwendet, um die Bildung von Prionfibrillen zu untersuchen – eine ganz andere Konformation der Prionendomäne zeigen.
