Enhanced terahertz-to-infrared(THz-to-IR)emission from gas-surrounded nanostructured metal films as a result of femtosecond laser irradiation is systematically investigated using selected gases. The dependencies of the THz-to-IR power on the gas species, gas pressure, and pump optical power are studied for Ar, N2, Ne, and He. The experimental results reveal that the power of the THz-to-IR emission...
Laser-induced plasmas with longitudinal size smaller than 40 μm are investigated as a source of broadband terahertz (THz) radiation. The angular dependent emission of the micro-plasma is measured with coherent detection, and the preferential directions of radiation are identified. The observations support electrons drift driven by the laser ponderomotive force as the principal generation mechanism...
We study the polarization dependence of THz wave air-biased-coherent-detection. By changing the polarization state of fundamental beam and DC field, the polarization of the THz field induced second harmonic is measured.
Terahertz generation from gaseous media was further investigated by a gas jet system. The experimental results reveal that the terahertz radiation amplitude is correlated with the third order nonlinear susceptibility.
A terahertz time-domain system with continuous bandwidth extending from millimetre wave through the mid-infrared is demonstrated using ionising air as the generation and detection medium. The measurements indicate that the bandwidth of such systems is constrained only by the optical pulse duration utilised. With use of a 25 fs pulse duration laser, a continuous bandwidth reaching 40 THz is demonstrated.
