The sheet electron beam focused by periodic cusped magnetic (PCM) focusing structure could transport more stable than uniform magnetic field because of diocotron instability. We simulated, fabricate and test a w sheet electron beam klystron with multi-gaps extended interaction cavities. To obtain particular intensity of magnetic field, two pieces of PCM focusing structure had a short distance, and...
This paper presents an All-in-one simulation method for klystron. The simulation results compared with conventional simulation results are also presented. Conventional simulation method calculates the klystron in part. The electron gun, beam-wave interaction and the collector are designed respectively, and thus the simulation results are inauthentic commonly. The All-in-one simulation method uses...
A sheet-beam Extended Interaction Klystron (SBEIK) is an attractive MMW amplifier because of its high gain per unit length and compact configuration.[1–3] However, with a large width-high ratio sheet beam, it is easier to become instable in long transmission distance. In this paper, the stability of multi-gap extended cavity for W band Sheet beam EIK has been studied. The method for judging oscillation...
This paper presents the simulation study of a C band klystron with a disc-load waveguide traveling wave output structure. The electron gun with a perveance of 1.5μp is designed. A 3-cell disc-loaded waveguide output structure working at π/2 mode is adopted in the circuit design. The beam-wave interaction system with disc-loaded waveguide output structure is simulated by PIC code. More than 50MW output...
An X-band to Ka-band klystron frequency multiplier was developed that can triple input frequency and amplify input power simultaneously. It had X-band components except a Ka-band output section. The experimental results showed that the peak output power of 14 kW can be reached at beam voltage of 36kV.
A sheet-beam Extended Interaction Klystron (SBEIK) is an attractive MMW amplifier because of its high gain per unit length and compact configuration. The output cavity is an important part of the whole tube, which is used for RF power extraction. In this paper, multi-gap extended output cavity designs of SBEIK are presented by 3D simulations, RF parameters have been calculated. Beam wave interaction...
The Development of the 10MW L-band multi-beam klystron was started in the Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IECAS) three years ago. The electrical and structural designs for this klystron have been accomplished, in which many technical problems have been resolved. In the design of electron optical system, the uniform field multiple-lens focusing scheme was adopted, by which the...
The development of broadband high power klystron has being done in the Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IECAS), and the breakthrough of the bandwidth of klystron has been obtained continuously. In S-band, after the achievement of 10% and 11% bandwidth, the relative instantaneous bandwidth of 12% has been brought to success in 2009. The paper introduces the design, simulation...
Free space laser communication becomes one of the most attractive research pot of next generation optical communication technologies due to its advantages of large data transmission amount, high directionality of transmission and high transmission security. The tapered semiconductor lasers are one of the most important optical sources in such systems. In this paper, we introduce the structure design,...
In this paper, the design of input and output cavity for X-band sheet beam klystron was presented. The fabrication and cold test of a barbell cavity were conducted, and the cavity characteristics were predicted by both CST simulation and measurement.
A coaxial output cavity with reentrant ring and short circuit pole for multiple-beam klystron (MBK) is presented, which can increase the frequency interval between operating mode TM310 and neighboring modes to more than 1.0 GHz in X-band, diminish the external Q-factor from 535.4 to 202.2, and make the field distribution of TM310 mode symmetrical enough. The simulation results are obtained by CST-MWS.
From 1960s the Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IECAS) began to study the broadband klystron. Many methods to extend bandwidth of klystron have been adopted and more than ten types of broadband klystron have been developed. Recently we have successfully broken through the bandwidth of 12% in S-band on the peak power level of 800 kW. This paper introduces the state-of-art of our...
Many types of Multi-Beam Klystrons (MBKs) with frequency range from L to Ku band, power level of several hundred watts to several hundred kilo-watts, have been developed in China during last 17 years. The research work on both special technology and tubes will be described in this paper. The technical problems of the MBKs are also discussed.
In this paper, by means of a 3D particle-in-cell (PIC) code, the non-linear calculation of beam-wave interaction in periodic cusped magnetic (PCM) field is presented for the X-band sheet beam klystron with five three-cell, extended interaction cavities. The simulation results show that the output peak power is more than 32.4 MW, with the interaction efficiency of more than 31.2%, and the gain of more...
A spurious-mode-suppressing method is introduced in this paper, aiming at increasing frequency interval between operating mode (TM310 mode) and spurious mode (TM020 mode). By means of CST-MWS, we find that the frequency interval can be increased 0.65 GHz in X-band by the method.
The Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IECAS) is developing an S-band 100 MW klystron for linear accelerators. The klystron has five-cavities, including a double-gap 2pi-mode output cavity. The output section consists of a cavity with double gaps and one output waveguide. To date two prototypes were fabricated. Unfortunately, the first one was suffered from leaking on the edge...
As trapped higher-order modes can possibly cause self-oscillations of three-gap coupled cavity, which may be a crucial influence on EIK's operation and performance, of great importance is analysis of modes stability through calculating the beam-loading conductance of higher-order modes. In this paper, a three-gap cavity in Ka-Band is designed in HFSS environment, which is followed by calculation and...
Since 1970s the Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IECAS) has successively developed S-band 5 MW, 20 MW and 50 MW klystrons for accelerators. Currently, we are developing the S-band 100 MW klystron. In this paper, the specifications of our typical high peak klystrons are presented and the key technical problems for developing this kind of klystron are discussed.
