The effect of ultrasonic energy on the interfacial microstructure in Cu-Al bonds is investigated to establish a relationship between ultrasonic energy, interfacial structure and bonding strength. It is shown that formation of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) at a Cu/Al interface is strongly dependent on the character of ultrasonic vibration; higher levels of ultrasonic energy enhance fragmentation of...
Cu metallization has been widely applied in back-end-of-line (BEOL) of integrated circuit fabrication, as well as in advanced packaging such as 3-D interconnects and through silicon via (TSV). As the device feature size further shrinks copper diffusion barrier layers with high conductivity, good thermal stability and low Cu diffusion coefficient are to be developed. Amorphous metal alloy films of...
The multilayer relaxations of (311), (331) and (210) surfaces of Ni, Cu, Rh, Pd, Ag, Ir and Pt have been investigated by pseudopotential DFT calculations. Our calculations show a relaxation sequence of - +... for the interlayer spacings of all (311) surfaces and - - + ... for all (331) and (210) surfaces. We also found that the surfaces of Ir and Pt had more significant relaxations than other surfaces...
We have, for the first time, observed directly the Cu-O chains adsorbed on a Cu(110) surface using a high resolution electron microscope (HREM). This observation was confirmed by a multi-slice image simulation based on electron diffraction and imaging theory. Our calculations indicate quantitatively under what conditions an adsorption layer can be observed by HREM with sufficient contrast. This study...
