We show that resonance modes in microcavities can be exchanged under a cyclic parameter variation in 2-D parameter surface. The mode exchange implies that the cyclic variation encircles a singular point, so-called exceptional point. We analyze the topological structure of eigenvalue planes near the singular point.
Unlike closed billiard systems, in dielectric microcavities localized resonances dominate due to their openness. The characteristics of openness of dielectric microcavities are imprinted even in individual localized resonance patterns. We discuss about how the openness affects resonance patterns in chaotic microcavities. We explain the pattern splitting and the unique emission patterns in some scarred...
