In this paper, recent progress on ultra-dense, space division multiplexed (SDM) optical transmission towards multi-Peta bit/s are reviewed. By using 6-mode 19-core fiber, we have demonstrated 2.05 Pbit/s transmission over 9.8 km just using C-band. High spatial multiplicity of 114 and ultra-high aggregate spectral efficiency of 456 bit/s/Hz/fiber have been achieved.
Multicore erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (MC-EDFAs) are essential components to achieve long-haul multicore fiber (MCF) transmission. An attractive technique for reducing the number of components and power consumption is the cladding–pumping scheme in MC-EDFAs in which all cores are simultaneously pumped using a single high-power multimode laser diode. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate long-haul...
Space-division multiplexing (SDM) with multi-core/multi-mode fibers has potential to increase the transmission capacity drastically. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of trans-oceanic transmission towards beyond 100 Tbit/s using multi-core fibers. Experimental results using 7-core fibers/EDFAs are also presented.
