We report on the growth and characterization of novel Ce2.2Bi0.8Fe5O12-(Ce:BiIG) epitaxial thin films fabricated via pulsed laser deposition. Our results suggest the highest Faraday rotation ever obtained in magneto-optical garnet thin films (0.55 degrees/mum, @1550 nm).
The low temperature crystallization of magnetooptic iron garnets CeY2Fe5O12 (Ce-YIG) in thin films has been investigated. The parasitic phases were shown to have a negative impact on the crystalline structure.
The electro-optical coefficient r33 of a novel ferroelectric compound (Calcium Barium Niobate) is estimated using a single beam set-up in a reflection geometry on thin film samples. The quality of the electrode used to apply the exciting field was estimated as a critical parameter. Following an electrode quality optimization we estimated a lower bound for the r33 coefficient as large as 130 pm/V.
