We report on the latest advances in photonic technologies of functions required for optical routing and switching systems including wavelength conversion, monolithic tunable optical routers, payload envelope deacutetection, packet forwarding, optical buffers, optical synchronizers, optical clock recovery, mode-locked lasers and 3R regeneration.
As photodiodes become more linear, accurately characterizing their linearity becomes very challenging. We compare the IMD3 results from a standard two tone measurement to those from a more complex three tone measurement technique. A Ge n-i-p waveguide photodetector on Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) substrate is used for the comparison. Additionally, we analyze, via simulation, the limitations of the measurement...
We describe the design and results of several hybrid silicon devices that combine benefits of III-V semiconductors with silicon-based platforms. Presented work includes a silicon-on-insulator evanescent phase modulator and a recirculating buffer using silica waveguides.
In this talk we review the latest progress on the DOD-N LASOR optical router project. Architectural studies including design and buffering will be discussed as well as prototype node performance. Recent results in integration in InP and Si/InP platforms will be described.
Optical amplifiers are important elements of photonic integrated circuits. We present a hybrid silicon evanescent amplifier utilizing a wafer bonded structure of silicon waveguide and AlGaInAs quantum wells. A chip gain of 13 dB with a power penalty of 0.5 dB at 40 Gb/s data amplification is demonstrated.
