This chapter discusses prosurvival signal transduction pathways, such as PI3K/Akt and MAPK/ERK signaling, induced by ionizing radiation in the tumor microvasculature. Molecular targeting of these radiation-induced signaling pathways provides a means to enhance tumor control. Preclinical studies show that this approach improves the efficacy of radiotherapy in mouse models of cancer.

Recently, radiation induced necrosis in the brain has been treated using bevacizumab, an anti-VEGF antibody. We validated the VEGF specificity by comparing the therapeutic efficacy of anti-VEGF with non-specific isotype control antibody.
