This paper proposes a new method to automatically detect important objects from video content. Our approach extracts video frames that show important objects, by recognition of typical TV production techniques. We also present a prototype application for DVRs, which utilizes the proposed method to enable easy access to important scenes of TV programs.
In the field of measurement signal processing, we should often change the characteristic of the stopband instantaneously. Such the filter that can change the frequency response instantaneously is called variable filter. We propose the design of FIR digital filters with variable stopbands. In this paper, the quasi-chebyshev characteristic is obtained by using an iterative weighted least square (WLS)...
The sequence of strings played on a bowed string instrument is essential to understanding of the fingering. Thus, its estimation is required for machine understanding of violin playing. Audio-based identification is the only viable way to realize this goal for existing music recordings. A naive implementation using audio classification alone, however, is inaccurate and is not robust against variations...
The continuing miniaturization of LSI dimension is causing the increase of process-related variations which significantly affects not only its design turn around time but also its manufacturing yield. Statistical static timing analysis (SSTA) is expected as a promising way to estimate the performance of circuits more accurately considering delay variations. However, LSIs designed using SSTA may have...
This paper presents novel methods for support for browsing a long meeting record towards supporting public involvement. Facilitating public involvement in the consensus building process for community development needs a lot of effort and time for sharing context and concerns among citizens and stakeholders. A record of public meeting often becomes too long to overview and to understand for people...
Novel sampling-timing background calibration for time-interleaved A/D converters has been proposed and verified by simulation. An FIR (Finite Impulse Response)-filter structure exploiting the sampling theorem provides simple but accurate time derivative of converted signal and hence enables reliable estimation and compensation of sampling-timing deviation of each unit ADC assisted by reference converter...
This paper proposes an information transmission model through Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). This model enables us to manage the complexity of information topic. We consider the factors of PSO as the three aspects of the information transmission: 1) the structure of network, 2) the value of information, and 3) the character of agents. Our main findings are 1) the relation between topics and the...
Many research works have been carried out to measure and use a driver's gaze directions to prevent traffic accidents caused by inattentive driving, neglect to confirm safe conditions, and other driver errors. A calibration process is needed to measure correct gaze directions for a gaze tracking system. However, existing calibration methods require a driver to gaze at specified points before driving...
Near-duplicate video detection is becoming a core-technology for analyzing the structure of a large-scale video archive. It, however, is naturally an O(n2) problem, where n is a value proportional to the total length of an input video stream. We have previously challenged this time-consuming task by reducing the cost required for each of the O(n2) comparisons. This paper, on the other hand, proposes...
A subdivision of a rectangle into rectangular faces with horizontal and vertical line segments is called rectangular drawings or floorplans. It is known that the number of rectangular drawings R(n) is asymptotically approximated by a geometric progression, where n is the number of inner rectangles. More precisely, there exists a constant c = limnrarrinfin R(n)1/n. The best upper and lower bounds of...
Unstructured peer-to-peer (P2P) networks have power-law topology, and the number of content requests also follows power-law distributions. These properties cause two problems: the high-load of high-degree peers and the quick deletion of rarely requested contents. We propose a new caching scheme that replaces the cache on the basis of the number of request messages per unit of time. It significantly...
New design procedures of time-frequency alignment for automatic speech morphing are proposed. The frequency alignment function at a specific frame is represented as a weighted average of vowel alignment functions based on similarity to each vowel. Julian, an open source speech recognition system, was used to design a time alignment function. Objective and subjective tests were conducted to evaluate...
In this study, a new BPF is proposed by combining the periodic dielectric structure and the short-ended stubs. First, the analytical results showed that the high dielectric rods implanted in the dielectric substrate provides a stopband without affecting the passband which the short-ended stubs produce. Next, the proposed BPF is fabricated by using the LTCC technology. Lastly, the fabricated BPF's...
The Polarized Gamma-ray Observer, PoGOLite, is a balloon experiment with the capability of detecting 10% polarization from a 200 mCrab celestial object in the energy range 25–80 keV. During a beam test at KEK-PF in February 2008, 20 detector units were assembled, and a 50 keV X-ray beam with a polarization degree of ∼90% was irradiated at the center unit. Signals from all 20 units were fed into flightversion...
With the recent flood of information, trust in that information is gaining a lot of attention in determining how information is used. Social bookmarking is a new information sharing service that allows individuals to bookmark and annotate web pages of interest or those that impress them. It is attracting attention and growing in popularity. In social bookmark services, users' bookmarks and annotations...
A three-dimensional time-dependent computational magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) code has been developed for research and development of a rotary-type gas circuit breaker. A test computation of arc-plasma flows under externally applied magnetic field in a small chamber has been carried out by using the developed computational code. The computational results have successfully demonstrated the unsteady behaviour...
The demand for content distribution services via wireless local area networks has been increasing. A multi-cell structure, which consists of multiple access points (APs), is more suitable for distributing content in wider areas. However, in multicast, there had been an unsolved issue; how to compensate for data-frame loss for each user. In particular, in wireless links, loss compensation techniques...
This paper presents a study of ensuring throughput fairness in wireless local area networks (WLANs) with hidden stations (STAs). In the conventional enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) mechanism, we found throughputs between stations became unfair due to the hidden-station problem even if the same quality-of-service (QoS) priority was given to the stations. In this paper, a dynamic control...
Since radio resources such as bandwidth and signal power are limited and shared by users in a service area, all of the users cannot consistently obtain satisfactory radio resources when the number of users in the service area increases past a certain point. A solution for such a problem is user-position control. In the user-position control, the operator informs users of better communication areas...
An overview is given of previously-proposed measurement-based connection admission control (CAC) methods. First we address requirements for CAC methods, and then provide a taxonomy for CAC methods. Measurement-based CAC methods are discussed in detail, classified according to the taxonomy, and compared against each other with respect to the requirements. We conclude that measurement-based CAC methods...
