The characterisation and ultrasonic measurements of tapered silica acoustic buffer rods are presented. The acoustic velocity profiles across the rod diameter are measured using a 225 MHz line-focus-beam scanning acoustic microscope. Acoustic lenses have been fabricated at the ends of the rods. Ultrasonics measurements at frequencies of 30 MHz and signals with good signal to noise ratios are demonstrated...
Static and dynamic fatigue tests were performed for abraded low-strength fibres and normal fibres. The analysis of the test results based on a bond dissociation model confirms the validity of the model and demonstrates that the two tests are equivalent. The implications of these results on lifetime estimation are discussed.
