Chemokines were originally described as chemotactic factors for leukocytes. A subset of the chemokine superfamily, the CXC chemokines, have been shown to play alternative roles and are known to play important roles in liver pathophysiology and homeostatic mechanisms. In this review, we discuss the functions of CXC chemokines in the processes of liver repair and regeneration.
