The traditional world has transformed into a digital society where almost anything can be accessed from anywhere. However, this digital society is responsible for an explosive growth of high-volume, high-velocity and high-variety information assets, with high demand for “Big Data”. A Software Defined Connectivity (SDC) is an emerging paradigm, which promises to simplify network management, to provide...
We report a dual-core fiber for simultaneous sensing of strain and temperature using BOTDA. By adjusting dopant compositions, 37% difference in strain-optical coefficient was achieved between two cores to differentiate temperature and strain responses.
We review novel optical fibers for space division multiplexed short-reach transmission systems in data center applications. Both linear array multicore fibers and elliptical core few mode fibers are discussed and transmission results are presented.
This paper reports ultrafast laser fabrication of waveguide circuits in optical fibers with rectangular cross-section and large flat surface area designed for on/in fiber integration. Low-loss coupler and WDM devices are directly integrated in fibers.
We observe the self-organization of light into its most spatiotemporally-unstable state through propagation in graded-index multimode fiber. We understand this effect in terms of mode-coupling caused by dissipation, disorder, and nonlinearity.
We proposed and experimentally demonstrated that nonlinear Raman-Nath second harmonic can be achieved when a fundamental wave with the phase periodically modulated, termed as structured fundamental wave, incident in a homogeneous nonlinear medium.
This talk discusses developments of distributed fiber sensors for real-time and simultaneous monitoring of fuel consumption and resulting temperature/strain variation with sub-cm spatial resolution in reactors such as solid oxide fuel cells during their operations.
To solve the problem of training rate decline in neural network caused by too much noise in the traditional image, a new method of expression recognition based on CNN was proposed. First, in order to narrow the face range, face image could be detected from the original image by using the AdaBoost cascade classifier. Then, the coordinates of the eye, mouth and other key parts and brow, nasolabial and...
In order to reduce the error caused by the inaccuracy of the sensor data and the wear of the mechanical structure in the motion control of manipulator and improve the self-learning ability of manipulator, this paper investigates a new method. We first use Kalman filter to compensate the error by fusing sensor data and the state error of the manipulator. Then, we use Q-learning to make manipulators...
Knowledge of the sediment layer number is critical for accurate geoacoustic inversion and sound propagation modeling. A hybrid image processing approach is introduced in this paper to extract the number of sediment layers from subbottom profiling files. A statistical equalization method, a multiscale line filter and a wavelet decomposition are used to detect and extract the horizontal lines present...
In order to enhance the tracking performance of maneuvering target by forgetting factor RLS algorithm, an improved forgetting factor adaptive function is proposed based on cosine function. This adaptive function can adjust the forgetting factor dynamically according to the tracking error. In addition, a comprehensive predictor is designed, which dynamically selects the linear predictor or the square...
This paper presents a decentralized technique based protection and control scheme for the active radial distribution network. A partitioning method for radial distribution network with multi-distributed energy resources is developed considering island operation possibility of DER, hence, the active distribution network is partitioned into zones with DER and zones without DER. Directional node configuring...
With the increasing penetration of renewable energies, the seamless integration and related energy management problems present challenges to the traditional power grid. Voltage source converter based multi-terminal HVDC (VSC-MTDC) has been regarded as a prospective emerging technology for the above mentioned issues. With its flexible control characteristics, it is expected that VSC-MTDC systems will...
This paper presents a novel control method that enables operation of Modular Multilevel Converters under non-sinusoidal AC supply conditions based on frequency domain decomposition of supply voltages. The proposed control method enables to inject or draw near sinusoidal grid currents even during the presence of harmonic distortions in the supply voltages without the use of additional hardware filters...
Conversational agents are often used to perform tasks on smartphones, but existing conversational agents are limited in capabilities and lack of customizability. My work explores using the programming-by-demonstration approach to enable end users to program new tasks for conversational agents by demonstrating using the familiar graphical user interfaces of third-party apps. I propose to use a multi-modal...
In this paper, a wireless power transmission with foreign-object detection (FOD) consideration is proposed. In the foreign-object detecting technique, a closed-loop feedback control is proposed by tracking the voltage and current of transmitting coil in order to signal the occurrence of a significant phase difference, anticipating preventing the system from potential risks. To validate the effectiveness...
A broadband silicon PSR is presented with an insertion loss lower than ∼0.7dB/0.3dB and crosstalk lower than 12.1dB/14.7dB for TE and TM mode respectively. By combining the PSR with AWG and Germanium PDs, an integrated polarization insensitive DWDM receiver is further demonstrated.
In the conventional directional modulation (DM) system without relay aiding, when the eavesdropper locates within the main-beam of the desired direction, it can intercept the confidential message from source Alice. In this paper, we propose a strategy to enhance physical-layer security of direction modulation in wireless transmission with the help of multi-relay cooperation. In this scenario, the...
In this letter, protograph based quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are designed for multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash memories, where the exact voltage signal values are unavailable but rather the quantized voltage signals are measured for soft decoding. Existing LDPC codes optimized for symmetric, additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN)-like channels are not optimal for flash memory...
