Principal component analysis (PCA) has been shown to have great potential for resolving the spectrum of a minute amount of chemical species, even if it is mixed with a large quantity of other constituents. This review demonstrates this newly found characteristic of PCA by the use of some application studies, along with an introductory summary of conventional spectral separation techniques.
