We have measured differential cross sections for electron-impact excitation of the j = 0→2 and j = 1→3 rotational transitions of physisorbed para- and ortho-hydrogen. The crystal-face dependence of the physisorption energies for H 2 and D 2 interacting with low-index faces of Al and Cu has been measured. The effect is pronounced for Al.
