This work was aimed at explaining the corrosion mechanism of commercial Cr–Mn steels at 1073, 1173 and 1273 K in the atmospheres containing oxygen and sulfur. The kinetics, phase composition, and morphology of scales growing on chromium in SO2 atmospheres were studied over the temperature range 1073–1273 K and SO2pressures of 3×104 Pa and 105 Pa.
