The two-dimension distribution of EMI in the on-chip power distribution network provides valuable information for understanding the immunity behavior of the integrated circuit. This paper presents an EMI sensor array to measure the distribution. The sensor generates periodical noise on the supply. The spectrum of generated noise is considered as the feedback signal. The power distribution network...
It is well known that ring oscillators suffer from jittering due to radio frequency interference on their supply. This paper shows that there is another effect of radio frequency interference on the ring oscillator. Although its average voltage is zero, a sinusoidal interference in radio frequency range causes a nonzero accumulated drift on the oscillation of the ring oscillator. As a consequence,...
To simulate the conducted radio frequency immunity, shortened ‘immunity’, of integrated circuit (ICs) requires the knowledge on the transfer coefficient of the propagation network for the disturbance and the intrinsic response of the on-chip transistor circuits to the disturbance directly on the circuit. This paper intends to find the correct simulation test bench to extract the intrinsic response...
The conducted RF immunity of microcontrollers is sometimes strongly frequency dependent. This paper discovers one origin of the frequency behavior of the immunity of microcontrollers against electromagnetic disturbances on oscillator pins. The behavior is explained by considering resonances in current loops through oscillator pins. The proposed theory is verified by systematically measurements.
A 2-dimensional finite element frequency domain formula is applied to the full-wave simulation of parallel plate field domain. A special meshing technology is adopted to identify and mesh the field domains that are the common area between the metal shapes on different metal layers. At last, a method to account for the inter-plate coupling at low frequencies and the associated meshing technique are...
