Mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma is an extremely rare variant of renal cell carcinoma, with only 47 cases reported previously. To our knowledge, this is the first time that contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging reconstructive appearances and characteristics of this tumor have been published. This tumor presented incidentally in a 35-year-old woman with an ectopic pregnancy.
To compare the operative costs associated with the use of incontinence kits, with or without biomaterials, with surgeon-tailored prolene mesh (STPM) in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) with or without pelvic organ prolapse. All operations for uncomplicated SUI with or without pelvic organ prolapse were reviewed from 2007-2008. Operative billing sheets including operative time, hospital...
To develop and distribute consensus recommendations to encourage a uniform approach to screening for prostate cancer (PCa) in men >75 years old. We also surveyed healthcare providers and men >75 years old to determine whether provider attitudes toward continued PCa screening in older men had changed. We mailed surveys to 2809 Iowa providers to assess their practice toward PCa screening and adoption...
Cystic dysplasia of the rete testis (CDT) represents a diagnostically challenging condition in the pediatric population. We report a new case of CDT that differs in presentation from the majority of other cases in the literature in that the child complained of scrotal pain and had a solid mass on ultrasound. Based on this experience and a review of the literature, we recommend including CDT in the...
The metallothioneins (MTs) are a family of small molecular weight trace metal and free radical scavenging proteins well established to play a role in the resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy in human cancers. MT gene expression is upregulated in response to the presence of metal ions such as zinc. Because prostatic tissue has the greatest concentration of zinc in the human body, in this study...
Ureterosciatic herniation is a rare benign event that can mimic diverticulosis or irritable bowel syndrome. This entity has been managed by a number of open surgical techniques. Laparoscopic repair of this entity enabled us to identify the defect, interpose mesh, and obliterate the hernia defect with minimal morbidity. This represents the first report of laparoscopic repair of a ureterosciatic hernia.
Objectives. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of finasteride (10 mg/d) or placebo on serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and recurrence rates in men with detectable PSA levels after radical prostatectomy.Methods. A total of 120 men, 48 to 89 years old, previously treated with radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer within the past 10 years, with serum PSA levels between...
We describe a case of testicular pseudotumor evaluated with both diagnostic ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. The findings were inconclusive and eventually radical orchiectomy and pathologic analysis were required to make the diagnosis. The typical US and MR findings of both inflammatory and neoplastic lesions of the testis are discussed.
