Self-folding is the ability of the structure to fold and/or unfold without human intervention or any application of external manipulation. It is known that the structure of folding object consists of two essential parts. These parts are the faces and the creases. In this paper, it is assumed that the faces could be built by using solid materials, and the crease lines can be built using soft material...
We demonstrate resonantly pumped amplification in a thulium-doped photonic crystal fiber. This enables greatly increased efficiencies compared to 795nm or 1550nm pumping and is attractive for pulsed amplification.
Potential high power laser-based xenon and terbium plasma sources are identified based on the reflectivity profiles of the available LaN/B4C, LaN/B, and Al/Yb/Sio multilayer mirrors for applications such as surface processing and semiconductor industry.
Wavefront distortions induced in various silica samples by a 2 μm thulium fiber laser were measured. Absorption of silica at 2 μm makes a full characterization of thermal lensing critical for high power applications.
The Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM), a joint NASA and USGS mission, is scheduled for launch in December, 2012. The LDCM instrument payload will consist of the Operational Land Imager (OLI), provided by Ball Aerospace and Technology Corporation (BATC) under contract to NASA and the Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS), provided by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). This paper outlines the...
We demonstrate enhanced electro-optic phase shifts in suspended InGaAs/InGaAsP quantum well rib waveguides compared to substrate-attached waveguides. The tighter mode confinement results in Vpi L coefficients as low as 0.41 V cm.
For the first time, a chemical sensor utilizing optical MEMS with a novel adaptive feedback circuit is presented. This circuit implementation of a hill climbing feedback algorithm is capable of autonomously detecting resonant frequency shifts for a range of MEMS resonators. Eight different cantilever-based sensors (width = 0.6-1.4 mum, length = 40-75 mum, and thickness = 1.8 mum), resonating between...
We numerically investigate the beam propagation inside an index antiguided fiber laser. The results show that reflection on the air-cladding boundary of a fiber has strong influence on the guided beam profile along the core.
A Ti:Sapphire oscillator tunable over 138 nm and maintaining a spectral linewidth less than 15 pm with no spectral jitter is presented. Outputs in the 200 mW regime with an excellent beam quality were achieved.
We numerically investigate the beam propagation inside an index antiguided fiber laser. The results show that reflection on the air-cladding boundary of a fiber has strong influence on the guided beam profile along the core.
High EUV source power has been demonstrated with a laser-plasma source exhibiting low debris and high conversion efficiency. This offers a viable path towards successful realization of EUV lithography for the next generation semiconductor devices.
A panel of deans and chairs from engineering technology programs and an industry representative addresses the challenges of the era of globalization. The panel members have been asked to address the challenges as they relate to the needs of engineering technology programs in order to maintain a position of leadership in the world-wide community. They address the skill sets that engineering technologists...
All-optical timing extraction, re-shaping, and wavelength conversion are performed simultaneously using a single EAM at l0Gbit/s with 231-1 PRBS data. Extracted timing is used for clock recovery and re-timing. The 3R power penalty improvement is 4.7dB.
In young adults during basal conditions spectral analyses of RWPCI (R-Wave Peak to Carotid Incisura) and QT intervals identified peaks characteristic to the Traube-Hering-Mayer (THM: 0.05–0.15 Hz) and respiration (RESP: 0.2–0.4 Hz) bands. Although the position of the peaks was similar to that observed with RR intervals in both bands, there was a tendency for greater concordance of the peak positions...
