Diagnostic ultrasound has been found useful in measurements on 242 patients (304 feet) referred with symptoms consistent with a diagnosis of Morton's neuroma. Plantar foot pressure measurements showed that this factor was not associated with the condition. Nearly all neuromata occurred in the second or third web spaces with almost equal incidence and the inter-metatarsal spacing was significantly...
A new method of fixation for distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint arthrodesis of the lesser toes using the Barouk screw has been used in five toes in five patients. The techniques as well as the advantages are discussed in this article. Deep infection, loss of fixation and failure of fusion were not evident in any of the cases. The Barouk screw fixation is considered a viable alternative to previous...
Rock climbers wear a specially designed shoe that is several sizes smaller than their usual street shoe. This is said to improve the biomechanical position of the foot for climbing, however it increases the stress on the lateral ligamentous complex of the ankle during falls onto the feet.1We present two cases of open lateral ligament disruption following a fall whilst rock climbing and wearing climbing...
A total of 63 patients with symptoms suggestive of Morton’s neuroma were examined with high-resolution ultrasound. Forty intermetatarsal masses were detected in 36 patients and the corresponding inter-space was surgically explored. Thirty-eight intermetatarsal masses were confirmed histologically to be Morton’s neuroma whilst 2 were not. Ultrasonography had reliably localized all these masses as confirmed...
Failed total ankle arthroplasty may be salvaged successfully by component retrieval and arthrodesis. We describe a technique using two cross cannulated screws and morsellized fibular autogenous graft avoiding the morbidity associated with harvesting iliac crest graft and using external fixators (compression device). Rapid union and a good functional result was achieved in all cases.
Three cases of medial subtalar dislocation, a rare injury, and the clinical outcome are reported here. Prompt recognition of these injuries followed by early closed reduction and cast immobilization for 3 weeks is recommended.
We report a case of bilateral trigger toes. The clinical presentation is similar to that experienced by patients with trigger finger. A history of painful and at times audible clicking of the toes should alert the clinician to the diagnosis. Conventional radiography, ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging were unhelpful in establishing a diagnosis. Surgical release of the flexor tendon sheath...
