We report all-optical wavelength conversion of high-speed differential phase-shift keyed (DPSK) and on-off keyed (OOK) signals using the nonlinear Kerr-effect in an optical chip. This was enabled by four-wave mixing (FWM) of the signal with a continuous-wave (CW) pump laser in a 7-cm-long dispersion-shifted planar rib waveguide in highly nonlinear As2S3 glass. Both conversion of 40-Gb/s DPSK and 160-Gb/s...
We demonstrate broadband wavelength conversion of amplitude and phase-shift keyed signals at 40-160 Gb/s using the optical Kerr-effect in a photonic chip for the first time. This is enabled by a dispersion-shifted, highly nonlinear As2S3 waveguide.
Ultra-broad bandwidth (3.75 THz) RF spectrum analysis of femtosecond optical pulses is reported for the first time, enabled by the use of a short 6 cm length Chalcogenide waveguide designed for high nonlinearity and broadband low dispersion.
A review of the development and applications of compact highly nonlinear Chalcogenide waveguides for ultra-fast all-optical signal processing is presented. We demonstrate the extreme tapering of a highly nonlinear As2S3 fiber to further increase its nonlinearity by more than an order of magnitude thereby enabling time-division demultiplexing of a 160 Gb/s signal by four-wave mixing (FWM) with significantly...
This research focuses on several aspects of chalcogenide all-optical processors. This study has chosen glasses in the Ge-As-Se system with the aim of optimising glass composition to obtain low loss, high nonlinearity and glass stability, whilst complementary efforts are focussed on the production, optimisation and application of chalcogenide waveguide devices to all-optical of high-speed telecommunication...
Chalcogenide glasses offer large ultrafast third-order nonlinearities, combined with low two-photon absorption and absence of free carrier absorption in a photosensitivity medium. This unique combination of properties is nearly ideal for all-optical signal processing devices. In this paper we review the key properties of these materials, outline progress in the field and focus on several recent highlights:...
