Prof. Rudolf Emil Kalman (Figure 1) passed away on July 2, 2016 at his home in Gainesville, Florida, at the age of 86. An obituary was published in the February issue of IEEE Control Systems Magazine [1], and the purpose of this collection of articles is to celebrate his legacy.
Output-saturated systems are linear systems whose outputs are saturated away from zero. We present conditions for observability of this class of systems.
This paper deals with the algebraic theory (reachability, observability, and minimal realizations) of signlinear systems. These are time-invariant systems whose dynamics are linear and whose output is the sign of a linear function of the states. The paper discusses differences as well as similarities with the standard case of linear systems.
