We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel scheme to generate eight-level electrical signals for a high-speed 64 quadrature amplitude modulation (64QAM) optical signal. The required optical signal-to-noise ratio at a bit-error rate of 2 x 10-3 for the single- (56.4 Gb/s) and dual-polarization (112.8 Gb/s) return-to-zero 64QAM is 21 and 26.5 dB, respectively.
This work demonstrates the use of time-stretch enhanced recording (TiSER) oscilloscope in capturing rogue waves created through stochastic nonlinear phenomena. In the experimental setup, optical rogue waves are generated, add them to pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) electronic data at 12 Gbps, and modulate the combination onto chirped optical carrier pulses.
We experimentally demonstrate a scheme for reshaping 40 Gb/s packets that is wavelength-preserving. The scheme, based on cross-gain-compression in an SOA, is polarization-independent and does not suffer from any transient effect at packet edges.
We experimentally demonstrate the performance of the recently proposed "OBP" algorithm based on optical phase retrieval by numerical back-propagation. Using this technique, distortion due to the modulator transfer function as well as the group velocity dispersion in a photonic time-stretch ADC (TS-ADC) can be suppressed, and frequency fading eliminated thanks to the use of a dual output...
An efficient genetic algorithm (GA) assisted bit error rate (BER) monitoring in digital communication link using a sum of Gaussian approximation (SGA) to the non-Gaussian link output variate is presented. The validity of the proposed method is established by both theory and experiment in three specific scenarios viz. non-coherent amplitude-shift-keying, misaligned optical transmitter-receiver system...
We report a detailed experimental characterization of the wavelength conversion of 10 Gb/s non-return-to-zero differential phase shift keying (NRZ-DPSK) optical signals based on four wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The performance of this coherent wavelength converter is compared with theoretical results and found to perform better, in terms of extended range of signal-to-pump...
The tolerance against self-phase modulation (SPM) of three differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) modulation schemes viz. conventional DPSK (CDPSK), symmetrical DPSK (SDPSK) and pi/4-DPSK in a 40-Gb/s multi-span dispersion compensated single-mode fiber (SMF) link is studied through detailed numerical simulation. The study takes into account the influence of pulse duty-ratio, tight optical filtering,...
An efficient genetic algorithm (GA) assisted bit error rate (BER) estimation method using a sum of Gaussian approximation (SGA) for a single channel optical direct detection DPSK system affected by nonlinear phase noise is presented.
