The oxidation behaviours of arc-melted (Mo 1−x Nb 1−x )Si 2 pseudo-binary alloys were investigated at temperatures between 1473 and 1773K with emphasis on the Mo-rich portion. C11b/C40 duplex-phase microstructure was formed in the composition range of x=0.05–0.2. In Mo-rich alloys (x⩽0.5), the near-parabolic law of oxidation kinetics was followed at all investigated temperatures...
Oxidation processes of poly and single crystalline NbSi 2 were observed in situ by high temperature optical microscopy to clarify the pest phenomenon. Pest disintegration is mainly determined by the pre-existing cracks in the microstructure. Porosity and grain boundary are the preferential oxidation sites. Pest oxidation of NbSi 2 at 1023K is not an intrinsic material property.
