A compact polarization beam splitter is demonstrated in SOI employing a 1×3 wedge-shaped MMI coupler and a 2×2 MMI coupler. The measured extinction ratios are higher than 12dB within a wide wavelength range covering C-band.
A nanoscale silicon optical 90° hybrid for TM polarization is realized. High performance over C-band is measured with an extinction ratio larger than 20dB, excess loss less than 1dB and phase deviation better than 5°.
A novel polarization converter and filter based on silicon multimode interference couplers (MMI) has been demonstrated. The measured transmission spectra of the proposed device for the light with arbitrary polarization exhibit a good performance.
An all-passive optical polarization and phase diversity network in silicon-on-insulator waveguides is proposed. It consists of two 2 × 2 MMI-MZIs, which work as polarization beam splitters, and two 4 × 4 MMI couplers, which work as 90°-hybrid. It is particularly suitable for silicon-based integration of polarization and phase diversity coherent receiver.
