A low-noise low-power direct conversion receiver with a differential RF VGA is demonstrated using 0.18um CMOS technology. A topology that uses a differential inductor load for a differential RF VGA is employed for the single-to-differential conversion. Since the common-mode rejection ratio of a differential variable gain amplifier is increased by the mutual magnetic coupling in a differential inductor...
Direct-readout electronics with high slew rate and small closed-loop frequency response peak is described by using a two-pole integrator for superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) applications. In our experiment, a weakly damped niobium-SQUID magnetometer with a large flux-to-voltage transfer coefficient $\partial V/\partial\Phi$ of about $380\ \mu\mbox{V}/\Phi_{0} $ was used to suppress...
A V-band dual-conversion down-converter with the Schottky-diode first conversion mixer and the analog Gilbert second conversion mixer is demonstrated using 0.15-μm pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistor (pHEMT) technology. The diode mixer based on quarter-wavelength design methodology occupies a reasonable real estate at millimeter-wave frequency while the analog IF mixer has the size advantage...
A unit cell composed of a microstrip ring and a slot on the ground plane is presented. The phase response range of the unit cell at 18 GHz is over 440° with a smooth phase variation. A Ku band reflectarray is designed and measured at 18 GHz to verify its performance. The maximum gain and half-power beam width is 31.7 dB and 4.7°, respectively. The reflectarray gives a high gain despite of some leakage...
An X-band conformal array antenna designed for the use of unmanned aerial vehicles with polarimetric radars/sensors is presented. The array antennas mounted on the cylinder with various curvature radii are experimentally studied. The array can be easily placed on the aircraft fuselage or payload due to its ultra-thin and ultra-lightweight characteristics. It should have potential applications in radar...
This paper presents a novel high gain rectifying antenna for 8 GHz wireless power transmission. A reflectarray is combined with the rectifying antenna to achieve high gain. An 8times1 rectenna array is also designed as a feed antenna of the reflectarray. The rectenna array has a return loss of 29 dB at 8 GHz. The rectenna array and the reflectarray have a gain of 15.07 dBi and 18.6 dBi, respectively...
This paper presents a dielectric film with metal strips fed by the image line made of a high dielectric constant material. By using a 10.8 relative dielectric constant image line, wide and symmetrical beam-steering angle is achieved with a simple structure. Antenna size is also reduced compared to the image line antenna made of a low dielectric constant material.
A study of the bowtie antenna fed by a coplanar stripline for terahertz applications is presented in this paper. The purpose of designing the antennas is to use it as the antenna elements of the photoconductive switch devices. The broadband and radiation characteristics of the bowtie antenna are compared with a dipole antenna in the same dimension scale. The bowtie antenna has a 10:1 frequency ratio...
