Silica supported AlCl 3 catalyst was prepared by ion-exchange technique. Ketones are oxidized by 30% hydrogen peroxide in ethanol and transformed into the corresponding lactones with very high selectivity catalyzed by silica–AlCl 3 . The catalyst was easily prepared in large scale with inexpensive materials and recyclable.
Benzyl alcohol, 2-methyl benzyl alcohol, 3-methyl benzyl alcohol, benzhydrol, 4-methylbenzhydrol and 4,4′-dimethoxybenzhydrol were oxidized efficiently to the corresponding ketones, carboxylic acids or aldehydes in good-to-excellent yields and purities at 45°C in acetonitrile using H 2 O 2 as oxidant catalyzed by AlCl 3 .
