A prototype tube has been fabricated successfully though technical study and the backward oscillation has been observed in the hot test. Extensive simulations are performed to investigate a ka-band gyrotron traveling wave tube amplifier (Gyro-TWTA) with helically corrugated waveguide using three-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) codes. With beam energy of 80 keV, the amplifier achieved an output power of 35kW, saturated gain of 28 dB, and an efficiency of 22%.
