We demonstrate a fast-speed PMDC for 40 Gb/s DBPSK and DQPSK. The PMDC increases tolerable average PMD of the DBPSK and DQPSK system to 9 ps and 18 ps, respectively.
We survey reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) architectures that enable efficient and flexible bandwidth utilization in dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) systems. Recent system demonstrations showing the potential of in-service capacity upgrade by using mixed 10-Gb/s, 40-Gb/s, and 100-Gb/s channels in a same network are reviewed.
We analytically study the cross-phase-modulation (XPM) impact on 40-Gb/s DQPSK from 10-Gb/s OOK channels, revealing its dependence on dispersion map and channel plan, and showing the suppression of the XPM-induced penalty via proper dispersion management.
We propose and demonstrate a novel colorless tunable optical dispersion compensator (TODC) consisting of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) connected to an ar- rayed-waveguide grating with a thermooptic lens. The MZI approximately doubles the magnitude bandwidth at large dispersion settings. We demonstrate compensation of a 43-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero signal dispersed over a range of -844 to + 1700...
We review current technologies that enable mixed 10 G/40 G transmission in a single DWDM system to achieve capacity upgrade, and discuss promising technologies and challenges for transmitting 100-Gb/s channels in the same system for further upgrade.
