The main purpose of this special section is to report recent research activities on the IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.11e protocols. The first two papers describe improvements in the IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function. The next two papers deal with IEEE 802.11e and the final paper provides an analysis of the impact of imperfect channel sensing on CSMA-CA protocols.
