Hybrid excited machines are of interest due to the potential of combining the high power density of PM machines with the flux-adjusting capability of wound field excitation. This paper reviews currently documented hybrid excited machines and compares the flux control performance and torque density of alternative hybrid flux-switching PM machines by means of finite element analysis. The iron loss of...
In permanent magnet (PM) brushless motors, a magnetic drag torque, which results from the effect of magnetic hysteresis, exists at low speeds but is often neglected. However, in some applications it can have potentially serious consequences. In this paper, a practical method for predicting the magnetic drag torque in a PM brushless motor is presented. It is based on the fact that the average drag...
This paper describes an improved implementation of direct torque control (DTC) to a permanent magnet brushless DC drive (BLDC). The commutation torque ripple, which occurs every 60deg elec. in a conventional 3-phase BLDC machine, with 120deg elec. 2-phase conduction, is reduced by employing a hybrid 2-phase and 3-phase switching mode during the commutation periods. It is based on the criterion of...
The steady-state dynamic performance of a direct torque controlled brushless DC drive when operated in single-and double-switch chopping modes is compared. It is shown that the vibration of the machine is reduced significantly when the influence of the cogging torque is accounted for in the torque controller.
