Taiheiyo and Obed-Marsh coals were steam-exploded at 230°C for 6 minutes for crushing and pore formation. Particle and pore size distributions were measured to determine changes in the coal. This method was effective for coal crushing and may prove applicable to the formation of small pores in the coal. Immersion in methanol before the coal was exploded provided improved results.
Describes how mesoporous carbons were prepared by steam activation of metal acetylacetonates dispersed on coal. The titanyl acetylacetonate complex was especially effective for preparation of these carbons. The surface area and mesopore ratios were evaluated by analyzing the nitrogen adsorption isotherms, and the crystal forms and size of metal compounds on the carbons were investigated.
