We report on the first experimental demonstration of ldquomagneticrdquo Photonic Crystals. We observe an avoided crossing of the Bragg resonance and the magnetic-dipole resonance of the constituting nanoscopic gold-wire pairs around 1100 nm wavelength.
We present metamaterials consisting of a combination of cut-wire pairs as ldquomagnetic atomsrdquo and a diluted metal. Our experiments reveal a negative refractive index at 1.4 mum wavelength, with a transmittance exceeding 50%.
We present a novel approach for fabricating large-area (16 times 22 mm2) magnetic metamaterials with a negative magnetic permeability at telecom wavelengths. Our approach brings the complexity of fabricating magnetic layers down to that of dielectric layers.
