A novel design-flexible 3D-hollow-waveguide with lateral- and vertical-periodicity has been demonstrated. A high-index-contrast-grating-(HCG), introduced as a lateral-periodicity, provides vertical as well as lateral-optical-confinement. The combined effect of vertical and lateral periodicity results in a low-polarization-dependence.

A novel ultra-low loss single-mode hollow-core waveguide using high-contrast grating (HCG) is proposed and simulated. The loss can be as low as 0.006 dB/m, three orders of magnitude lower than the state-of-art chip-scale waveguides.

We show the effects of shrinking the high contrast grating size on a wavelength-tunable VCSEL experimentally and theoretically. With a grating having only 4 periods, we demonstrate the fastest tunable VCSEL with speed >25 MHz.

We report a nano-electromechanical optoelectronic (NEMO) tunable VCSEL with a record compact (140 nm times3 mum times3 mum) TE-polarized high contrast grating (HCG). A record high tuning speed of ~60 ns is experimentally demonstrated with single mode operation (SMSR ~ 40 dB).

We present theoretical study of fast and slow light in a chirp-compensate semiconductor optical amplifier scheme. We obtain excellent match with experimental results. Using this model, we predict that a delay-bandwidth product of 33 can be attained with properly chosen parameters.
