This paper develops a rate-based model predictive controller for handling large power load transients through coordination of the engine and hybrid power subsystems in an aircraft. Simulations on a nonlinear model of a small UAV show that constraint enforcement is improved when the controller is able to coordinate the subsystems within the aircraft and anticipate changes in the power load.
The paper considers a problem of integrated thrust and electrical power management for an aircraft. An advanced configuration of the aircraft electrical power system consisting of two generators driven by the gas turbine engine is considered. A Model Predictive Controller is designed to respond to thrust and electrical load commands while maintaining system operation at high efficiency setpoints and...
This paper focuses on the modeling and control of a Free Piston Engine Generator (FPEG) which is an alternative to conventional internal combustion engines to be used as an auxiliary power unit (APU) in hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). A physics-based, continuous-time model and a discrete-time, control-oriented model are derived. A model predictive control approach is proposed to manage system constraints...
