This paper analyzes electromagnetic wave propagation through periodically stacked metallic fishnets from zero frequency to the first Wood's anomaly. The close relation between wave propagation through stacked fishnets and extraordinary transmission through a single fishnet is highlighted. It is shown that, for normal incidence, stacked fishnets may behave like 1D backward-wave transmission line metamaterials.
