Direct visualization of higher-order data avoids the error and overhead introduced by the widely used resampling approach. Here, we give an overview of problems and solution strategies in the context of our research on higher order visualization and exemplify them using volume rendering and extraction of isosurfaces and line-type features. We also discuss future developments.
This work is concerned with the proposition and empirical evaluation of a new feature extraction approach that combines two existing image descriptors, Integral Histograms and Local Binary Patterns (LBP), to achieve a representation that exhibits relevant properties to object detection tasks (such as face detection): fast constant time processing, rotation, and scale invariance. This novel approach...
Image keypoints are broadly used in robotics for different purposes, ranging from recognition to 3D reconstruction, passing by SLAM and visual servoing. Robust keypoint matching across different views is problematic because of the relative motion between camera and scene that causes significant changes in feature appearance. The problem can be partially overcome by using state-of-the-art methods for...
The information encoded in ultrasound speckle is often discarded but it is widely recognized that this phenomenon is dependent of the intrinsic acoustic properties of tissues. In this paper we propose a robust method to estimate the de-speckled and speckle components from the ultrasound data with the purpose of tissue characterization. A de-speckling method, which can conveniently work with either...
Computed tomography (CT) can contribute to the early detection of lung diseases like emphysema, a chronic and progressive disease. Texture-based methods can be explored to classify regions of interest (ROI's) into emphysematous areas and normal areas. In this work we evaluated the importance of a set of parameters in the classification of lung CT images, such as the size of the ROIs, the quantization...
Carotid plaques are the main cause of neurological symptoms due to distal embolization or flow reduction. An objective classification of such lesions into symptomatic or asymptomatic is crucial for optimal treatment planning. The paper proposes a diagnostic framework to tackle this problem which consists of image processing, plaque detection, feature extraction and classification using AdaBoost in...
This paper proposes a new approach for the Power Spectrum (PS)-based feature extraction applied to probabilistic Laban Movement Analysis (LMA), for the sake of human behaviour understanding. A Bayesian network is presented to understand human action and behaviour based on 3D spatial data and using the LMA concept which is a known human movement descriptor. We have two steps for the classification...
