The properties of whispering gallery modes (WGM) resonances of an optical fiber can be exploited in a number of different applications. Making these resonances tunable is essential for many applications. Using erbiumdoped fibers to prepare the microresonator (MR), WGM resonances can be tuned by pumping the MR with an auxiliary diode laser, enabling an all-optical fine tuning of the resonances. The...
All-fiber lasers permit the development of efficient, robust and compact coherent light sources. We propose to use an acousto-optically modulated fiber Bragg grating (AOM-FBG) for active mode-locking of an all-fiber laser formed by a short section of erbium-doped fiber, a delay line, the modulator itself and a second stationary FBG that defines the output coupler of the laser cavity.
This laser is robust, compact and might be a simple and low cost source for distributed Brillouin back-scattering sensors, where the light source employed in most of these applications includes an external cavity diode laser plus a pigtailed modulator and an optical fiber amplifier.
