1 The proposed interpolation filter comprises two concatenating filters, adaptive pre-interpolation filter (APIF) and the normative interpolation filter in H.264/AVC. The former is applied only to the integer pixels in the reference frames; the latter generates all the sub-position samples, supported by the output of APIF. The convolution of APIF and the standard filter minimizes the motion prediction...
In this paper, a perceptual multiview video coding scheme is proposed, based on the synthesized Just Noticeable Distortion (JND) maps. In JND-based perceptual video coding, the residues after intra or inter prediction are tuned according to the corresponding JND thresholds to save the bits without affecting the perceptual quality. In our scheme, to reduce the computational cost of generating the multiview...
In this paper, we derive separable KLTs for coding H.264/AVC intra prediction residuals, using a simple image correlation model. Our analysis shows that for some intra prediction modes, we can in fact just use the DCT for performing either the row-wise or column-wise transform. Furthermore, we also compute the KLT that should be used based on the image correlation model, which happens to have sinosuidal...
The paper presents a lossless coding method based on predictor blending approach that codes nine widely used benchmark images with the lowest average bitrate ever published. At the same time the algorithm is more time efficient than its most important competitors: TMWLEGO, MRP 0.5, and Multi-WLS. A set of 20 blended predictors is applied, including adaptive RLS/OLS ones, ALCM, CoBALP, and a texture...
In this paper we study various chain codes, which are representations of binary image contours, in terms of their ability to compress in the best way the contour information using memory models. We consider five chain codes, including the widely used AF8 and 3OT codes, and note that they correspond to memory models of first and second order for contour representation. In order to provide predictive...
In this paper we propose the use of intra-frame prediction with lapped transforms for image coding. Both lapped transforms and intra prediction exploit the redundancies of neighboring blocks and the combination of the two techniques results in a very efficient image coding scheme. The difficulty to combine them comes from the necessity to use for the prediction of the current block pixels in the causal...
In this paper, a novel intra prediction algorithm, named enhanced line-based intra prediction (ELIP), is proposed to improve the traditional intra prediction methods for image/intra-frame coding. Different from the existing schemes where the interpolation filtering only depends on the intra prediction mode, in the proposed ELIP, the linear filtering coefficients are further refined by imposing both...
In order to further improve video coding efficiency, a novel adaptive sub-pixel interpolation filter is presented in this paper. Considering the local image characteristics, the proposed method designs interpolation filters for sub-pixels in low-frequent and high-frequent areas separately. And in order to reduce the header information, flexible symmetry is assumed for each filter. Experimental results...
This paper proposes a pure line-by-line image coding scheme (LBC) for many-core computers. The proposed scheme can simultaneously use tens and even hundreds of cores to compress one HD image. In LBC, an input image is coded line by line sequentially and each line is divided into many short segments at equal length that are coded independently. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can...
A first-order-residual/second-order-residual (FOR/SOR) based video coding algorithm that incorporates the super macroblock (SMB) and the inter-frame stripe prediction (ISP) technique is proposed for high definition (HD) video coding in this work. We first examine the limitation of the SMB in high-bit-rate coding, and show that a simple extension of the block-size is not sufficient to get a significant...
The high compression ratio of fractal encoding is based on the increasing of the computation complexity. In order to meet the application requirements of real-time sharing and transmission, it is becoming an important research area to advance the encoding speed by developing the parallelization algorithm based on multi-core programming. In this paper, the OpenMP program model is applied to parallelize...
As sensor networking technologies continue to develop, the notion of adding large-scale mobility into sensor networks is becoming feasible by crowd-sourcing data collection to personal mobile devices. However, tasking such networks at fine granularity becomes problematic because the sensors are heterogeneous and owned by users instead of network operators. In this paper, we present Zoom, a multi-resolution...
Integral imaging, also known as holoscopic imaging, appears to be a promising approach for glassless 3D. This paper presents the general concepts of integral imaging and lenticular lenses, which are used in the image acquisition and displaying step. Special attention is devoted to the analysis of 3D holoscopic video compression considering its intrinsic nature of having a high cross-correlation between...
Eye gaze determines the view point, focus of attention and interest of an individual. Gaze estimation systems compute the direction of eye gaze. These systems play an important role in human-computer interaction. The gaze pointing systems is a replacement for existing input devices in gaze communication applications. The gaze tracking methods are based on interpolation, 2D geometric transform mapping,...
Some regions of objects will be measured incorrectly or can't be measured in optical 3D measurement system based on coded structured light, due to occlusion, shadow, transfer function of measurement system and noise etc. To obtain 3D data as much as possible and as correctly as possible, we proposed a method using improved binary spatio-temporal encoded illumination and voting algorithm. Firstly,...
A Printed photograph cannot be used to recover the original digital image with improved accuracy because of distortions introduced during the process of scanning the printed material. This paper describes a method to recover the original digital images from the print-scan channel with improved quality. We solve this approximation problem by formulating a method for approximating the original digital...
Colour structured light with spatial neighbourhood is one of the famous techniques that are used to acquire 3D information. By projecting the pattern onto the targeted object and taking the image, the structured light is measured as coded words and the corresponding points could be found. Finally, the process to reconstruct 3D information could be solved using the principle of triangulation. A major...
The application of distributed coding in many media applications, where low power and low-complexity encoder device is essential, is a new paradigm. In this paper, we propose a new pixel-domain Distributed Video Coding (DVC) scheme, in which both temporal and spatial correlations are exploited at the decoder. The Slepian-Wolf decoder is modified by introducing a source decoder to exploit Wyner-Ziv...
Real-time video compression applications such as Digital Video Camera (DVC), Television Studio Broadcast, and Surveillance video utilize the H.264/AVC video encoder in intra-only encoding mode. The H.264/AVC standard supports multiple intra-prediction modes to reduce spatial redundancy in the video frame. The intra-prediction process for a current pixels block requires the reconstructed pixels from...
In this paper, we present an adaptive sharpening filter for a pre-processing to improve the subjective quality and the performance of H.264/AVC compression. We use quantization step size and pixel variance to select sharpening filter strength. The simulation results show that the proposed pre-processing filtering process improves the subjective quality and reduces bit rate about 0.85%(CIF) and 1.46%(1080p).
