IP cameras are used in various parts of an aerodrome to help manage and control aircraft on the ground. This paper describes the implementation of a prototype that intersects the feed of these cameras and apply relevant information to aircraft on the actual captured image using real-time data from a ground radar.
The popularity of applications using Augmented Reality, especially due to the dissemination of smartphones with high processing power, introduces the need for Fiducial Markers that can be detected quickly, with good accuracy and can deal with partial occlusion. Fiducial Markers can have different shapes, sizes, structure and colors, and are inserted into a scene to facilitate the detection and consequent...
We present ‘ARClassNote’, an Augmented Reality application that enables users to save and share handwritten notes across multiple optical see-through Head Mounted Devices. In an augmented classroom environment, ‘ARClassNote’ makes it easier to achieve bilateral communication between instructors and students, and share written class materials without occlusion. We showcase how each component of ‘ARClassNote’...
Digital impressions of teeth, obtained through intra-oral scanning, allow for more efficient and cost effective treatments of many dental indications. Current state-of-the-art intra-oral impression acquisition systems make use of a separate monitor to show the scanning progress, forcing the dentist to divert attention away from the scanner and the patient. In this paper, we present an augmented reality...
This paper proposes a method of embedding AR (augmented reality) markers in a high-speed video sequence so that they are imperceptible to human eyes. The embedded markers appear for very short periods and keep changing their positions at lightning speed. By carefully designing the timings of marker display, a camera with a sufficiently short exposure time running at any frame rate is able to detect...
A significant issue associated with the use of video see-through head-mounted displays (VST-HMD) for augmented reality is the presence of latency between real-world images and the images displayed to the HMD. For a static scene, this latency provides no real problem, however for dynamic scenes, which arise when the HMD user moves their head, when real-world objects move, or a combination of the two,...
Mixed Reality aims at combining virtual reality with the user's surrounding real environment in a way that they form one, coherent reality. A coherent visual quality is of utmost importance, expressed in measures of e.g. resolution, framerate, and latency for both the real and the virtual domains. For years, researchers have focused on maximizing the quality of the virtual visualization mimicking...
It is estimated that the number of devices connected to the Internet will be 50 billion by 2020. How should a not-so-tech-savvy end-user be able to discover, configure, and directly interact with a myriad of connected things in an intuitive and comfortable manner? Even if smartphones and wearables have shown potential for managing IoT environments, we cannot rely on that they can be used for all future...
Since the early years of the twenty-first century, the performing arts have been party to an increasing number of digital media projects that bring renewed attention to questions about, on one hand, new working processes involving capture and distribution techniques, and on the other hand, how particular works—with bespoke hard and software—can exert an efficacy over how work is created by the artist/producer...
Augmented Reality (AR) technology is often used for arrangement simulation such as furniture before purchasing. This study focuses on the simulation of product layout in stores and exhibits in museums with show-window. Displaying the virtual information with correct position against real objects is important for realistic experience in AR applications. In this study, we keep the consistency between...
Most existing libraries use floor plans and call numbers in order to locate books rather than providing truly user's awareness of the extensive collections and services for students in the library context. With a collection of more than 48,568 volumes at the Engineering and Exact Sciences library of the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (UADY), the task of looking for a book can be really a time-consuming...
For augmented reality (AR), computer-generated virtual objects are overlapped on the image of a real world. Since a disturbing real object (e.g, a moving human) on the display of an AR device reduces the immersion to AR experiences, the virtual objects need to be augmented after eliminating the disturbing object. From this motivation, this paper presents mediated reality (MR) photography, where the...
A navigator draws a route on a chart to navigate a ship from an origin port to a destination port. Then, the navigator sails the ship based on the route. In other word, the navigator misidentifies the route there is a possibility of running aground. In order to prevent navigator's misidentifies, this study proposed a sea route display system which displays the sea route on the surface of the sea by...
With the boost of computing power in mobile devices and availability of cloud APIs in recent years, mobile augmented reality (AR) applications have become increasingly embedded in people's everyday life. However, effective and intuitive interaction between virtual and real worlds in these AR applications is still an open question. In this paper, we make one step towards an answer by exploring the...
Low light situations pose a significant challenge to individuals working in a variety of different fields such as firefighting, rescue, maintenance and medicine. Tools like flashlights and infrared (IR) cameras have been used to augment light in the past, but they must often be operated manually, provide a field of view that is decoupled from the operator's own view, and utilize color schemes that...
Digitisation of natural history collections not only preserves precious information about biological diversity, it also enables us to share, analyse, annotate and compare specimens to gain new insights. High-resolution, full-colour 3D capture of biological specimens yields color and geometry information complementary to other techniques (e.g., 2D capture, electron scanning and micro computed tomography)...
A myoelectric prosthesis, which can be used as a replacement for a person's upper limb, is able to control many hand motions optionally via surface electromyography (sEMG). Although many researchers have developed myoelectric prostheses that realize various motions, evaluation of their practicality has only been carried out on small numbers of patients. To solve this problem, a myoelectric prosthesis...
3D object selection and manipulation is one of the essential features for any augmented reality (AR) system. However, distant object selection and manipulation still suffer from lack of accuracy and precision. This paper introduces an alternate 3D interaction technique for selection and manipulation distant 3D object in in immersive video see-through AR. The proposed interaction technique offers a...
This article proposes a laser beam encoding method that is used to control an augmented reality system. Experiments were performed using a red laser emitting a wavelength of λ = 650 nm and a power of P = 3 mW. The purpose of the study was to investigate the methods of modulation and demodulation of the encoded laser signal, and to examine the influence of parameters such as laser pulse duration, camera...
