Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is responsible for approximately 1.3% of all deaths among men over the age of 65. Given the fact that once an aortic rupture occurs mortality rates are estimated between 80%–90%, national AAA population screening programs are currently established as an effective prevention policy. Driven by the latest advances in mobile-health (m-health) systems and services, and more...
This paper presents a new self-adapting and content-sensitive optimization technique for the H.264/AVC in-loop deblocking filter [1], focussing on the visual enhancement of the perceived reconstruction quality. Performed frame-wisely at the encoder side, the proposed algorithm first identifies visually important image regions in the currently decoded and blocky frame, including natural and artificial...
With fast developments in video broadcasting and communication, high definition and high bit rate video applications with low latency are becoming more and more popular. This leads to the emergence of the intra-only encoding scheme as it can provide the required performance. Specific to these applications, a novel intra-only video coding algorithm is proposed in this paper. A node-cell macroblock...
For aerial surveillance systems two key features are important. First they have to provide as much resolution as possible, while they secondly should make the video available at a ground station as soon as possible. Recently so called Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) got in the focus for surveillance operations with operation targets such as environmental and disaster area monitoring as well as military...
The present paper deals with robust and transparent video watermarking in the MPEG-4 AVC domain. It reconsiders and extends an insertion technique previously presented by the authors in order to increase its overall performances (transparency and robustness against re-encoding attacks). In this respect, an objective study on the practical impact of the errors induced by the MPEG-4 AVC (iterative)...
Scalable video coding (SVC) is the extension of the H.264/AVC standard. Because of the variety of video transmission systems, storage systems and computing capabilities, video bit stream need to adapt the various needs of different terminals and network conditions, while SVC is a highly attractive solution to the problems above, it provides network-friendly scalability at a bit stream level with a...
This paper presents a silicon prototype for a pre-standard algorithm developed for HEVC ("H.265") called Massively Parallel CABAC (MP CABAC) that addresses a key video decoder bottleneck. The test chip has over an order-of-magnitude higher throughput than state-of-the-art H.264/AVC CABAC engines, while maintaining high coding efficiency. Architecture and joint algorithm-architecture optimizations,...
The ITU-T H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 Advanced Video Coding standard provides a reduction up to 50% of the bitstream rate if compared to previous standards. Among the innovation presented we should highlight the CABAC entropy coding (Context-based Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding), which shows a reduction of 9% to 14% in the bit-stream rate, when compared to the CAVLC basic entropy coding. The strictly...
Real-time video compression applications such as Digital Video Camera (DVC), Television Studio Broadcast, and Surveillance video utilize the H.264/AVC video encoder in intra-only encoding mode. The H.264/AVC standard supports multiple intra-prediction modes to reduce spatial redundancy in the video frame. The intra-prediction process for a current pixels block requires the reconstructed pixels from...
This paper presents an efficient region-based WP (weighted prediction) with global brightness change detection for real-time H.264 encoder. We improve WP for local brightness changes using the reference reordering, without additional memory bandwidth and computation for ME (motion estimation). We also show that the region-based WP can be extended to an MB-based WP with the marginal increase of computation,...
In this paper, we present an adaptive sharpening filter for a pre-processing to improve the subjective quality and the performance of H.264/AVC compression. We use quantization step size and pixel variance to select sharpening filter strength. The simulation results show that the proposed pre-processing filtering process improves the subjective quality and reduces bit rate about 0.85%(CIF) and 1.46%(1080p).
This paper presents multiple stage transform (MST) and its supporting tools. It is called MST Environment (MST_Env), which can provide better coding efficiency than any other international video coding standards such as H.264/AVC. Compared to H.264/AVC, the improvements can bring on average 4.31% coding gain in high profile, with average coding gain of 5.64% for HD sequences.
An efficient error protection scheme is proposed for video delivery over lossy channels. Flexible Macroblock Ordering is used to generate spatial descriptions that are sent over disjoint paths. Additionally, descriptions are partitioned to allow unequal error protection against burst errors. Experimental results show that a significant quality gain can be achieved (up to 3 dB) in the presence of burst...
Scan patterns for quantized coefficients that are intra predicted are needed to improve the efficiency of entropy coding. Therefore, various scanning algorithms have been proposed. In this paper, a modified adaptive scan pattern algorithm is proposed. A new scanning pattern can achieve an entropy coding gain in intra coding by updating the zero-counter and scan pattern at every macroblock. Experimental...
Extended variable-length mode coding (EVLC), which dynamically creates code words for coding modes by taking account of the spatio-temporal correlations, is proposed. Experimental results show that EVLC achieves average bitrate reduction of 2.29% and a maximum bit-rate reduction of 6.84% compared to H.264/AVC with negligible increase in computational time.
Scalable video coding (SVC) is an H.264/AVC scalable extension (SE) that is used to provide network-friendly scalability at the bit stream level. SVC newly adapts the various prediction techniques. They can achieve high encoding efficiency, but they increase the computational complexity. In this paper, an efficient mode decision is proposed to speed up SVC with combined scalability. The experimental...
Guaranteeing real-time performance for video encoding on platforms with limited resources is becoming increasingly important for consumer electronics applications. In this paper, an extension of an H.264/AVC encoder with complexity scalable motion estimation (ME) control is presented. An upper bound on the complexity of encoding a single frame is achieved by restricting Sum of Absolute Differences...
The purpose of this paper is to improve allocation of the number of bits without skipping the frame by accurately estimating the target bits in H.264/AVC rate control. In our scheme, we propose an enhancement method of the target frame rate based H.264/AVC bit allocation. The enhancement uses a frame complexity estimation to improve the existing mean absolute difference (MAD) complexity measurement...
In this paper, we propose a novel bit-rate control using information of coded block pattern (CBP) based on statistical moments with respect to the amount of the bits from each macro-block, in an encoding of general video codec such as H.264/AVC and HEVC. Since the proposed bit-rate control is based on the simple computation using the quantization rules in the video codec, it is not necessary for an...
In this paper, an interleaved motion vector coding is proposed which supports flexible coding order of motion vector components according to directional property of vertical and horizontal components in motion vector field. It requires no additional information for adaptively selecting the coding order.
