The article examines Karl Buecher’s ›Kriegsschriften‹ (war writings) from 1915 which deal with the role of the press in times of war and provoked severe criticism from German newspapers. Nonetheless, Buecher founded the first German department of journalism at the University of Leipzig in 1916 and must be recognized as one of the forefathers of German communication and media studies.
