The aim of the article consists of defining the indices of Free Indirect Speech on a lexical level which detect it in the body of a text as a distinguished type of represented discourse. The lexico-semantic peculiarities of Free Indirect Speech are analysed in fiction, in particular, in the genre of short story. Throughout, the illustrations are drawn from W.S.
