This paper gives an insight into the modeling of unsteady flows over a NACA 0012 pitching airfoil using computational fluid dynamics. The theoretical background of unsteady viscous flows is presented, followed by a description of the CFD simulation. Obtained aerodynamic characteristics are presented, and an analysis of the data is given.
With the ever increasing trend of cramming more transistors on the silicon and the consequential increase in the thermal design power, combined with stacked die and multiple die configurations inside the package footprint, optimized coolant chambers becomes an imperative design need to remove heat efficiently from the silicon. Liquid cooling is investigated to efficiently meet the challenges of high...
This paper deals with design of a new protective structure and completes the first step resulting to the preliminary draft of its shape and structural design. The process of designing the protective structure started with creation of the computational model solved in the software environment Ansys Fluent, where the most common cuboid shape of protective structure was assessed on the bases of output...
This paper presents a validation study of a multi-physics coupling code for solid fuel pyrolysis in solid-fuel ramjet engine (SFRJ). An in-house code has been developed to model flow, turbulence, heat transfer, solid pyrolysis, and chemical reactions. Unsteady reacting simulations are performed for swirling and non-swirling flows in SFRJ with high-density polyethylene solid fuel cylindrical grain...
Classical approaches to the 3D thermal simulation of electronic systems require assumptions regarding the amount of power dissipated and its distribution. Errors in such assumptions are a leading cause of resulting errors in temperature rise predictions. Although 3D electro-thermal simulations can be applied; where electrical boundary conditions are specified and current density, electrical potential...
The water column inside the turret of an FPSO typically undergoes sloshing due to speed as well as wave effects. Sloshing can have detrimental effects and therefore needs to be investigated and minimized. Sloshing occurs at the free surface region. As a result of sloshing, the volume of entrapped water in the turret of an FPSO increases and its acceleration due to the ship's motions induces inertia...
This paper shows a comparative analysis of the effect of the machining angle through the simulations of non-isothermal multidimensional fields flow though electrodes for proton exchange membrane (PEM) cell. Different designs of channel (coil, parallel and pin-type), positions of the inlet feed gas, just as the effect of curvature machined into different sections of the channels according to some relevant...
Accurate prediction of flood extents in river catchments happen to be a challenging issue. Paper exposes numerical simulation techniques of flooding circumstances, induced by flash floods, dams/ dykes breaking. The results reveal that the Computational Fluid Dynamics approach for floods modeling is skillful to adequately replicate the foremost aspects of the floods routing. Supplying warnings with...
Dry-type transformer applications are growing in transformer market because the technology is non-flammable, safer and environmental friendly. Since no oil is present in a dry-type transformer for dielectric insulation, solid insulation is often used instead for compact dimensions which however constrains air convection as the major cooling approach. Therefore, how to accurately predict winding temperature...
The turbulent flow past a circular cylinder has been studied extensively by previous researchers due to its importance in many engineering applications. In particular, the wave run-up is one of the most significant design factors when offshore structures are operated. In this paper, the wave run-up height and depression depth around a vertical circular cylinder were numerically investigated. The commercial...
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) underwent a huge development. The advantages of this type of fuel cell includes low operating temperature, quick start-up, planar configuration and easier sealing due to the use of a solid electrolyte. However performance remains one of the most important issues in commercialization of polymer exchange membrane fuel cell PEMFC. There are many factors which...
The paper deals with analysis of temperature rise in a fuel cell module using the CFD numerical model. The module is based on a low-temperature fuel cell with polymer electrolytic membrane. There is a simulation of stable condition, when the cell supplies constant output and the system generates waste heat exhausted through the cooling fins. The aim of analysis was to find potential problematic spots...
A gas engine is an internal combustion engine which runs on a gas fuel, such as coal gas, producer gas, biogas, landfill gas or natural gas. Generally the term gas engine refers to a heavy-duty industrial engine capable of running continuously at full load for periods approaching a high fraction of 8,760 hours per year. Unlike a gasoline automobile engine, which is lightweight, high-revving and typically...
An overview of flow simulations for the offshore wind industry is given. The analyses concern blades, turbines and whole wind power farms. Both aerodynamic simulations and hydrodynamic simulations are considered. Applications are taken from the experience of DNV GL Group.
Metal processing industry in Sri Lanka began around 3000BC. Ancient chronicles like Mahavansaya, Thupavansa and Pujavaliya proved the Sri Lanka's history of metal industry. Archaeometallurgical surveys of Sri Lanka have revealed a non-conventional wind-driven iron smelting furnace for the first time in the world. Some of them dated back to third century BC. Replications of iron smelting process have...
Artificial heart valves are used to replace diseased heart valves [1]. Accurate performance of the valve includes a right opening and closing process of the valves during each heartbeat. Recent studies focus on 3D computational models for commercial valvular prosthesis in non-stationary conditions for non-Newtonian Fluids [2]. However, lifespan of mechanical valves needs to be improved. The main goal...
In recent years, sediment scour near bridge piers and abutment is a serious problem which cause nationwide concern because it has resulted in more bridge failures than other causes. After this question arose, more and more numerical analyses about this problem have been carried out. In this study, computational model simulations using a 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model were conducted to...
Due to the widespread use of incineration as a method of waste disposal for solid waste, it is important to have a detailed mathematical modelling and understanding of the incineration process. In this paper the governing equations for mass, momentum and heat transfer for the gaseous phases of the incinerator furnace are described and relevant sub-models are presented. The solid waste bed is assumed...
Francis type turbines are commonly used in hydropower generation. Spiral case, stay vanes, guide vanes, runner and draft tube are the main components of the turbine. Available net head and discharge values determine the initial dimensions of these parts according to theoretical and experimental data. In this study, a design methodology is described to optimize the design by integrating in-house Matlab...
The aerodynamic characteristics directly affect the stability, driving characteristics, safety, operation, and oil consumption of automobiles. This study examines the aerodynamic drag force acting over the car body using CFD analysis and results were validated experimentally by conducting the wind tunnel test. The drag force acting over the car body is determined by both numerical and experimental...
