A co-creation approach to tackling ill-structured problems (ISPs) for tertiary students is proposed. Key findings of a preliminary study assessing the approach's learning effectiveness are discussed. The new approach is more in line with problem solving in the real world and improves cognitive, meta-cognitive, and epistemic cognitive learning.
People have developed various ways to continue and ease their lives and to learn what they wonder about since the early ages. The development of technology has provided people with the opportunity to obtain information easily and fast. However, people need to have not only information but also other skills to do something. Therefore, the aim of higher education is to make students gain knowledge and...
This paper describes the course on Advanced Computer Structure given in the Computer Engineering Degree at the University of Murcia. The subject carries six ECTS credits and students have 150 hours during which they attend theory classes and practicals, and carry out their personal work along with the corresponding evaluation. This article analyzes the teaching methodology, the timing, the coordination,...
Fundamentals of Computer is a compulsory course of non-majors in many universities of China. In this paper, we explore the reform on this course for two goals. One is to redesign the teaching content: from operation oriented to computational thinking oriented. Computational thinking is one of the most important ability for 21st century and has become the primary goal of computer foundation education...
Instructional design includes effective instructional materials and teaching learning process to accomplish learning objectives. The effective instructional materials such as multimedia can be positively supported by students to more easily understand and adapt the information from the subject. Unfortunately, in the teaching process of Computer Networks lecture in Faculty of Computer Science, Dian...
A database is said to be efficient, if it performs operations like delete, update and insert in an unambiguous way. These operations can be performed efficiently by normalizing the database. By normalization, the tables in a database are organized in a well-structured manner that reduces the generation of redundant data as well as ensures that the data dependencies make sense, i.e., all the functional...
Computer Networks, an undergraduate computer science course, is taught through a variety of new technological tools but more attention on assessment strategies using those technological tools is desirable. Research studies have shown that assessment methods also influence students' learning. Current assessment techniques, even those which include technology, focus more on summative assessment rather...
We present a descriptive statistical study about an Intelligent Learning Environment for learning Java programming and the student's learning results. Java Sensei is an Intelligent Learning Environment (ILE) built around an affective tutoring system working in a web-based environment. The ILE was implemented under different learning methodologies like problem solving for the pedagogical module, knowledge...
In this paper, the authors present an investigative process which can be used to enhance the design of mathematics learning games. Several techniques such as mathematics pedagogy and game design lenses [12] were studied in the development of this investigative process. Game design lenses are tools developed for examining game designs. The game design lenses were analyzed and mapped to several mathematics-specific...
SPOC-supported Data Structures (DS) course during the Autumn 2015 semester in University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) was created over the USTB course center and Tsinghua Online Judge (OJ) system. Data from the course center, OJ and terminal exam is analyzed to reveal the key objective factors in affecting SPOC-supported DS course, and survey from the students in our DS course is analyzed...
In this work, we studied how programming novices explore and search on online discussion forums. We collected novices' intentions and search logs. The results indicated that novices had significant different behavior patterns compare to experienced learners, and they indeed require specific assistant in generating search queries, and filtering helpful information among the search result. This work...
Teaching STEM is a promising application domain for game-based instructional methods. In this paper we present a serious game organized as a role playing game: players learn how to inhabit the headspace of someone other than their primary ego identity, offering them the chance to develop a stronger sense of empathy. The same empathy is established between the player and her Intelligent Pedagogical...
Learning programming is a difficult task. The learning process is particularly disorienting when you are approaching programming for the first time. As a student you are exposed to several new concepts (control flow, variable, etc. but also coding, compiling, etc.) and new ways to think (algorithms). Teachers try to expose the students gradually to the new concepts by presenting them one-by-one but...
Hiring qualified employees and finding suitable jobs are important for firms and college students, respectively. However, with the economy going down in recent years, the structural contradiction between recruitment and employment, which makes both firms and undergraduates hard to fulfill their needs, has becoming more and more serious and has drawn widespread attention both in academic and business...
Principles of Computer Programming (PCP) is a compulsory subject for all degree courses offered during first year of study in UniKL MIIT. There were seven courses taking the subject as a compulsory subject, regardless of being in technical, arts or management disciplines. This study is to identify weak students from the technical disciplines. The study also identifies the non-technical disciplines...
Some pre-service teachers struggle to understand the elements of learning design. A good grasp of learning design is important in designing effective learning activities. Subsequently authentic tasks, such as massive open online course (MOOCs) were used to expose the pre-service teachers to elements of learning design. A descriptive case study was used. In this case study the purpose was to investigate...
Being “digital natives”, contemporary students are already enabled to use almost any kind of technology in the classroom. Due to that fact, teachers should focus on choosing the right tools to help them develop their competences — basic skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary for personal fulfilment and employability in a knowledge society. Critical thinking, creativity, initiative and problem solving...
A significant challenge within university education, especially with regard to the teaching of highly theoretical topics like requirements engineering, is to maintain students' interest and motivation whilst addressing the core concepts that will enable students to work in industry upon graduation. It has long been established that experience-based learning can aid in both these feats: On the one...
Project-based learning approach is focused in preparing students to work in industry. In traditional academic environments, it is difficult to reproduce real scenarios such as in industry. Software Engineering courses require practice and learning hands-on, however, with such limitations in academy, it is not easy to develop the competences to work in real world practice. In this paper we present...
The student entry phase is the period of a study process in which fundamental technical and non-technical skills should be acquired. The interrelation of those skills is not only crucial for the study process itself. Rather, the systematic, well-reflected methodological usage of specific technical knowledge is a key element for the future professional career after graduation. Unfortunately, during...
